Public visibility into the behavior of law enforcement during the 2020 George Floyd Protests
On May 25th, 2020, George Floyd was killed by a group of four law enforcement officers. Hand cuffed and restrained, officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on George's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, while George begged for air, and eventually lost consciousness and died. The brutality, and shocking casualness of the murder deeply shocked the conscience of the nation, triggering nationwide protest and outrage.
At the same time, police officers acted with shocking brutality and brazenness against protestors, attacking at will and with impunity. Innocent protestors were shot at with rubber bullets, tear gassed, beaten, arrested without cause, and generally terrorized by a police more interested in their own power than the constitutionally protected rights of the citizens that they ostensibly serve.
Such crimes should not go unnoticed or unpunished. This tool exists to ensure that such behavior does not disappear into the depths of Twitter, but is brought for and categorized for all to see. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.
